News

Dates announced for the 7th season of Motorola Dublin Fashion Week

[ 23.04.08 ]

Every season sees Motorola Dublin Fashion Week (MDFW) grow from strength to strength and as the new dates are announced as Monday 25th – Wednesday 27th August 2008, the next season to showcase the Spring Summer collections for 2009 promises to be no exception.

The exhibition space, which is trade-only open to buyers, stylists and the press, will once again take place in the Radisson SAS Royal Hotel, Golden Lane, Dublin 8.

The last season of MDFW, which took place in February of this year, was a huge success from the point of view that the numbers attending continued to rise, attracting both domestic and foreign retail buyers from leading stores and boutiques. The international press interest proved to be of paramount importance to participating designers as well as the increase in public awareness and interest.

With the success of the Collective Show at February’s event, which saw some of Ireland’s leading designers such as John Rocha, Deborah Veale, Quin & Donnelly and Joanne Hynes showcase their Spring collections to a packed chq Building in Dublin’s IFSC, plans are underway to build on the MDFW show schedule for the next season. It was at this show that the John Rocha Bursary Award in association with MDFW was announced which will see €10,000 provided to a graduate designer in order to develop their label.

The coming season will also see the inaugural Fashion Awards in association with MDFW which will be a celebration of all that makes the Irish fashion industry so unique and exciting. The evening will be an industry led event and will take place on an evening during the three days of MDFW at the RDS. Further details will be announced nearer the time but continue to check www.dublinfashionweek.com.

We will continue our commitment to bringing the world of fashion to a wider audience through The Talks, our series of short presentations from some of the leading industry insiders. Hosts of fantastic presentations at recent seasons include the Godfrey Deeny (Fashion Wire Daily), Stephen Sealey (Brown Thomas), Philip Stephens (Unconditional), Jonathan Kirby (Levis) and Gordon Richardson (Topman) as well as Ann Marie Scichilli of Value Retail, to name but a few. Further details as to who will be joining us in August will be on www.dublinfashionweek.com.

Two Irish Designers to Showcase
Their Spring 2008 Collections in Brown Thomas
In association with ‘Motorola presents Dublin Fashion Week’

As part of their continued commitment to support Irish designers participating in Motorola Dublin Fashion Week, Brown Thomas has announced that it has selected two Irish designers who will be offered the opportunity to showcase their Spring Summer 2008 collections in its flagship Grafton Street store at the end of January 2008. The chosen designers are Eilis Boyle from Meath, and Joanne Hynes from Galway.

The selection was announced today by Head of Fashion Direction Shelly Corkery as part of the ‘Brown Thomas Designer Mentor Programme’ and is a great opportunity for the designers who will have the opportunity to sit alongside the world’s most celebrated international labels in the prestigious store. At last season’s MDFW chosen designers; Jennifer Rothwell, Tim Ryan and Vivienne Walsh recently showcased their collections in store to great acclaim.
Caribbean born Eilis is currently living in Clonee, Co Meath and has spent much of her life traveling the world and being influenced by diverse places such as Bolivia and Japan. A graduate from the Instituto Europeo di Design in Madrid, Eilis has collaborated with some of Spain’s top fashion designers, as well as renowned Irish designer Lainey Keogh. Brown Thomas have commended Eilis on her directional Spring Summer 2008 Collection, citing her use of beautiful fabrics, simple lines and elegant finish as being unrivalled at Dublin Fashion Week.
Joanne Hynes from Tuam Co Galway combines beautifully the worlds of art and fashion. Her experimentation with fabric embellishment, cutting techniques and use of proportions truly stand out in today’s fashion industry. Joanne’s Spring Summer 2008 Collection was praised by Brown Thomas for her amazing attention to detail, contemporary elegance and great price points.

The Brown Thomas Designer Mentor Programme is an initiative which aims to provide invaluable commercial, design and career advice to young Irish designers as they embark on the international fashion scene. During Motorola presents Dublin Fashion Week, Brown Thomas Buying Director Stephen Sealey and Head of Fashion Direction Shelly Corkery met with the designers to discuss their collections and offered their extensive fashion and practical expertise, advising on fabrics, colours, fit and specifically on how to meet the real wardrobe expectations of today's customer. In addition, comprehensive advice on the importance of establishing successful production, delivery and sales procedures, in this highly competitive industry, was imparted.
